アーサー・マッケン

Arthur Machen

ウェールズ、カーレオン・オン・アスク生まれ。
短篇「パンの大神」で衝撃を受けて、このジャンルを良く読むようになった。のち、大人になってから読み返すも、なぜ衝撃を受けたかが良くわからない。
そんなものであるのだろうとは思うのだけど、あの頃の純真さはどこに忘れたのか。
ホラー（恐怖、怪奇小説）って、たぶん、どこかしら純真な部分を遺していないと受け止められないものなのではないかと考える。
と、するならば、マッケンを読めるか読めないかは、大きな問題である。
『白魔』を見つめながら、読むのが怖い。これが本当の恐怖なのではないだろうか。
