Ｌ・スプレイグ・ド・キャンプ等、表記あり。ディ・キャンプで統一。
カリフォルニア工大で航空工学を学び、スティーヴンス工大で1933年に修士号を得、その後、特許を扱う会社に勤め、この分野での手引き書を書く。
1942年にアメリカ海軍予備役となり、アシモフ、ハインラインとフィラデルフィア海軍造船所で過ごす。
わかっちゃいるけど、泣いちゃうよっていうのが、ある。つまり結末は予想できなければならない、しかし泣かさなければならないという、いわゆる人情話的な。
『闇よ落ちるなかれ』がまさにそれ。ラストシーンは涙ぐまないと嘘だよ。これこそSF的な感動なんだと思うけど。
短編「ブルー・ジラフ」は傑作。探して読む価値がある。子供の話。
どちらかというと活躍した期間と影響力を考えると不遇の作家なんだろうけど、なんとなく他の作品は個人的には受けつけない。
