表記は、初期、「エフィンガー」。途中から「エフィンジャー」に変更。
ニューオリンズに暮らし、イェール大学、ニューヨーク大学に学び、1970年クラリオン・ワークショップ出。
化ける。ってそれは化け猫の話ではない。アーティストに比較的見られる現象だけど、ある時から突然、それまでの姿とは一変させて再登場する。それも相当な変貌を遂げる。
例えば、シルヴァーバーグ、例えば、晩年のハインラインなど、など。良きにつけ、悪しきにつけ。
乏しい翻訳から感じるに、このエフィンジャーも1970年代と1980年代では大きく違うように感じる。
この作家の資質は「ピンチヒッター」という軽めの短編(けっこう楽しかった記憶がある)や、ノヴェライズの猿の惑星からは遠いところにあったのであろう。
