抒情的、田園的と言われる作風である。最初に読んだのは『都市』の一遍、「逃亡者」、なんかよかった。
で、ふたつめは『大宇宙の守護者』で、短篇「目標の世代」なん～か違う。違うんだよなあ、というのは抒情的だという解説を読んだから。
『都市』も、ピンと来なかった。かろうじて踏みとどまったのは、『中継ステーション』
短篇の「踊る鹿の洞窟」もよろし。楽しいファンタジー『小鬼の居留地』には惚れている。しかし、手元にはない。むむ。
1950年代は、波乱の時代であり、よきアメリカではないと思っている。得た夢が壊れつつありそうに思える世界で、SFが隆盛した。
危ういアメリカの地位の中で、唯一誇れるのは市民生活の向上であり、そうした未来に夢を託す。
そんな世相に背をむけたかのような作風で生き残っていたシマックは、すばらしいのかもしれない。
