アイルランド首都ダブリン生まれ。
女流作家。幼いときにロンドンに一家で移る。1938年、オックスフォード大学入学。古典と哲学を学ぶ。第二次世界大戦中から難民救済キャンプで働き、その時、ベルギーで、サルトルに会う。実存主義への関心を深める。1948年から1963年までオックスフォード大学で哲学の特別研究員になる。
晩年はアルツハイマー症に冒される。夫で文芸評論家のジョン・ベイリーの回想録から映画「アイリス」(2001)が製作された。
